Going Solo- A four-week itinerary in Central America (part 3: Belize)

The final post on Central America moves on from Guatemala (see previous post here) to Belize, the last stop on my four-week solo journey. The entire dynamic shifted to a more Caribbean holiday vibe and I was back to speaking English but was still clueless most of the time. A country known for its reefs, I managed to swim with a manatee and watch Stephen King’s It in Caye Caulker’s premier cinema.

Part 1 covered the start of the trip in Honduras (you can find it here). This post moves onto crossing the border into Guatemala and moving up the east side of the country. My Spanish was improving but it still wasn’t good enough- I ended up stuck on top on canyons and getting chased through the jungle.

Stretching from Honduras up to Belize, this was my first solo trip, and it was to countries with some of the highest reported homicide rates in the world. Each country will have its own post (Honduras, Guatemala and Belize). From police escorts to fishing condoms out of my home cooking- it was a mixed bag.
